There are a few key points to passing both the NEBOSH General and NEBOSH Diploma:

Read the syllabus - it tells you exactly what NEBOSH expect you to know and understand. You will not go wrong, especially if you are writing reports or doing Unit D. The layout is planned out for you and tells exactly what content should be in each heading - this is especially true of the Diploma. The Executive Summary, although at the front of any report should be left to the very last for you to complete. Remember that this part is aimed at senior managers and it is essentialy a business case which outlines: cost benefit, the impact of taking or not taking action (penalties, enforcement action etc), any breaches of legislation and recommneded actions in a priority format.

Hit the past papers as an enhancement to your studying. They are priceless if you have the NEBOSH past papers with the examiner's comments as you will get a feeling of how to correctly answer questions ensuring you use the key words.

Study lots - it's a massive subject so ensure you study what is relevant (syllabus comes into play here).

If a question has the word 'and' in it once or more than once then it is a two, three etc part question. If you only answer the first part of the question - you will only qualify for marks available for the part of the question you have answered. For example: 'outline two reactive measures AND two proactive measures that can be used in assessing the H&S performance of an organisation.' If you give four reactive answers and no proactive answers then the maximum you can qualify for is half marks.

The diploma takes a certain amount of dedication, no matter how experienced you are. My dog was so happy when I finished as he got his walks back.

Hi Neil i would recommend that you highlight the salient points of the report in a structured, systematic way, having given an introduction as to the "purpose" of the report, try and restrict the areas of observation, too many will lead to a confusing, hard to navigate report, not to mention the "Headache" factor, remember that reports are not to demonstate how clever you are (even tho thats what you are trying to do for an exam)they are to provide management with comprehensive, easy to read information. Your report will be better received and responded to if it contains accurate "Conclusions" and "Recommendations" no manager likes to get reports that give them the task of having to analyse the required responses. your recommendations should include What needs to be done, By Who, in what time scale (urgency) any training required, (Very important is costs and imacts on the company) both positive and negative, i.e benifits in increased production etc. Good luck

Michael,

If you send me an email I can provide you with a copy of HS G 6 and L117. The ACOPs states that all operators should be trained and competent and have training on different types of trucks,Familiarisation training and periodic testing. Although the ACOPs is not a legal document it can be used as proof/evidence in a court of law, it clearly states how to comply with legislation.

It is also aviseble to use approved instructors for training.

help/advise.we have recently acquired a used(1 year old) narrow aisle forklift truck for use in our re-layed warehouse. we have 3 members of staff in the materials handling dept.who at the moment are using mentioned forklift,1 of whom has had minimal training from 1 of his colleagues at a different site & the other 2 no training at all. all 3 staff members have counterbalance forklift licenses but none of them for the afforementioned narrow aisle truck. what i would like to know....is it a legal requirement for all staff using the narrow aisle truck or does the counterbalance cover this? what are the comebacks, legally, from the lack of training, licenses, etc.and from a health 7 safety viewpoint? thankyou for your help.

everyone must understand that the NEBOSH examination is by way no easy ride you must eat sleep and drink health and safety for you to pass, just reading pass examination papers is the wrong way get through the exam. You must revise and digest all the information and remember it.
Health and safety is very complecated and to pursue a career in this field you won't have past papers to look at it needs to be in your head!
