Graeme, I would obtain a copy of the 'IEE Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment'.
This book covers all the basics on testing. It is self explanatory and even a layman can work out what needs to be doen. It gives you drawings and diagrams and even provides example of forms for testing. Everything an employers needs to knwo to discharge their duties diligently.
You can purchase a copy from Amazon or any reputable book store.
"Socket testing" is infact periodic test and inspection. It depends on several things,i.e. is the building used for the public, does it come undr local authority guidelines etc.
Most offices are 5 yearly but as Phil says the most accurate information can be found at the IEE, but I would recommend the testing and inspection hand book, as they say "available from all good book stores" or just phone an electrical contractor, they will help you and you don't even have to use them!!
Not absolutely sure, but you do need to be able to prove compliance with electrical requirement of the Electricity at work regulations 1989, The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and BS 7671 (IEE Wiring Regulations).
Can somebody tell someting about the above, I've looked on the HSE website to see what the COP is for testing sockets within the workplace?? is there any legislation? if so; where is it...

Hope that helps a little.
