In total agreement with the above point, with the best intention in the world, it can be easy to 'overlook' anything that may be wrong due to either financial, management pressure or productivity needs, the other way of looking at it of course is that the onus of standard of repairs and condition of the racking (at the time of the inspection) is down to an independant company and not your liability if you follow their instruction on the required repairs. If you shop around you can find independant SEMA approved companies that will carry out the racking inspections free of charge, the only stipulation is that they carry out any remedial work, a catch 22 situation I hear you cry, only if you let it be, at the end of the day. if you keep your racking in a good safe well maitained condition between inspections there won't be any call to have repairs done.. SIMPLES....

You seem to be forgetting the word 'independant'. The reason it's there is so that a body external to your organisation can check that your checks are picking everything up and that the inspections aren't just a ticking the box excercise. The great majority of companies including yours wouldn't but there's always one.

I know it's annoying having to spend money carrying out a job you think you can do in house but there's always a reason.

We deal with lifting operations, and our HIABs and lifting beams need to be certified. We have gone on a course to become competant persons for checking the chains etc, but when it came to the Heavy duty equipment is soon became very apparant that it was best completed by a qualified engineer for insurance and H&S purpose's.

Can anyone help please?
We are looking at training someone up to do our annual racking inspections. Apart from the usual in-house daily, weekly checks and so-on, guidance will say you should have an independent inspection by a competent person at regular intervals. Someone with the relevant experience and training. How do you become a Racking Inspector? Do you have to be SEMA approved? Would you have to have an engineering background or qualification? Most training companies talk about rack safety and awareness courses. What to look for and what to do whilst working with racking. They seem reluctant to offer approved Inspector Courses and seem to lean toward selling you their own inspection services. Maybe there isn’t a course of this kind! Maybe I’m talking out of my a***. We pay over £5000:00pa for independent racking inspections. We have experienced people with the capacity to take this on. So, for the sake putting them through a reputable/approved course, we could do it at a fraction of the cost. Any comments greatly appreciated.
