We've had the same thing recently.

There was only one that said he didn't have a Birth Certificate or Passport, and the company gave him 28 days to order one, and even allowed him to do it online during worktime.

This link may help with that:

I don't know about paying, the standard service is only £7.00 so it might be worth considering a 'bonus' payment?
But I guess that everyone would need to have that payment.

If a Birth Certificate is being used, they need to provide secondary proof:

i have been asked by senior managers to obtain and photocopy our employees right to work in UK documents.
the employees have been given a list of suitable documents for ID.

however, a few have turned round and said they don't have passports or have lost their birth certificate etc and have commented that they are British/EU citizens and will not produce documents that are going to cost money to obtain.

can i take disciplinary action against the said employees for refusing to cooperate and can i require that they produce documents?

i can see their point of view to a certain extent and some have worked here for years.

where do i or the company stand on this?
i know about fines for employing illegal workers and so on. I'm confused.

any ideas appreciated.

regards, Jim
