Age old problem of not living long enough to enjoy it or living too long and running out of money or health to enjoy it.

Of course, for those who bought into the virtual 'unit linked' rather than more expensive but with profits endowments retirement may not be an option for a long time yet so if trapped with little or no equity it may be better to significantly reduce if not pay off the mortgage over the recession as could offer better value for money than putting it all into savings over next few years until the market returns.
