The British Safety Council publishes an Accident Incidence Rate (AIR) for each type of industry classification (SIC).

Once obtained you perform a simple calculation to see how your figures compare. They offer an annual award for companies acheiving a rate below their SIC rating. you can get details of your SIC AIR and of the award by contacting British Safety Council at 70 Chancellors Road, London, W6 9RS or phone 0208 8741 1231 or email mail@britsafe.org

How do I know ? I have just had a booklet called National safety awards 2003 dropped onto my desk, the closing date for the award is in March 2004.

Following on from Patrick, you must consider what sort of things get reported, by the sounds of it, you have a reasonable safety culture, where employees are reporting the minor incidents as well as the major ones, this can bump up the accident stats for you, but you can argue that this is preferable to the alternative.

Bob

You don't say what industry your from. Accident statistics are not always a good comparitor as there can be many variances such as type of work, premises, shift systems, good or bad reporting systems etc.

I realise this is not helpful however in order to get a reasonable response to this question you might want to detail the exact nature of your business.

We employ approximately 1450 people. During the last recorded 12 month period we have had 242 reported accidents - the vast majority of them minor. There were 6 RIDDOR reportable accidents.

The Board of Directors looked at the raw data and thought that 242 accidents was a high number.

I didn't think so. In simple terms it means that 1 in 6 employees had some form of accident during a 12 month period be it a cut finger, a slip or whatever.

Has anyone else got any similar data I can make a comparison with?

Thanks
