I think it shows the way that some sectors are totally disregarding their duties to protect employees from occupational noise induced hearing loss.
Only yesterday when the pavement outside my house was being dug up to replace a gas main. An employee was using a pneumatic road drill without any hearing protection at all. When I asked him if he would normally use ear defenders his reply was that he had a hood on his coat and this was suffiicient. I am unawear of the noise attenuation provided by a coat hood but I think his employer a very large well known roadworks company should at the very least provide training, a suitably rated set of ear defenders and not allow a coat hood to be used as the only hearing protection.
I worked in a power station for many years form 1980 till 93 ,for CEGB then
N Power .
iT was very noticable the amount of older members of staff whom had not worn Ear protection of any kind .Many were clearly at a loss of hearing .
