Driving on company business has been recognised by my employers as one of the two major significant risk areas for employees (the other being working all day in front of a computer).
We have policies, risk assessments and additional driver training along the lines of "drive to stay alive" for those who we believe need a bit of extra tuition to remain safe on the highways.

However much we do we cannot however reduce our accident rate to any great degree for the simple reason that we cannot anticipate what will happen on any given day on any given road. One of our cars was written off when the chute on a concrete mixer broke free and side-swiped the car. This was on a bend on a country road and our driver simply had nowhere to go - with the inevitable result. Another driver had a serious accident when a loose horse ran out in front of her, without warning, from behind a house. One second a clear road and the next second a horse on the bonnet!
It is impossible to include such incidents in a policy or risk assessment except under the heading of "Be prepared for the unexpected" so we must presume that having passed a driving test our drivers are "competent" to take to the roads. All we can do is take steps to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, their licences are valid, insurance and MOT's are up to date and the drivers are not being asked to drive to too many appointments in the space of a short time or to drive too long without a proper break.

We believe the accident rate remains high because when all else fails "it happened on Tesco's car park when I was inside the shop so I didn't see who did it". This covers a multitude of sins and gets the driver off the hook for that moment of inattention when they hit the gate leaving their house in he morning!
