...Government announced last week [17 October] that smoking is to be banned in pubs, restaurants and all enclosed public places in Northern Ireland from April 2007. The ban brings Northern Ireland into line with the Irish Republic, which became the first European country to impose a ban in March 2004. Scotland will bar smoking in all enclosed public places from April next year.

This follows actual bans in Ireland and New York, and proposed bans in Scotland and Australia.
