  2. Call for prison sentences to deter blacklisters

...il law sanctions such as fines will apply.” The Government consultation, which closed recently, followed the raid by the Information Commissioners’ Office (ICO) in March 2009 on the premises of the Consulting Association, run by Ian Kerr. ICO officials found a blacklist containing the names of more than 3,000 construction workers. More than 40 major construction companies were subscribers to the list. Mr Kerr was fined £5,000 at Knutsford Crown Court for breaching the Data Protection Act. Many, such as construction union UCATT, argued the fine was far too low.

  5. Religious beliefs: should employers cater for all faiths?

The result was that 390,000 of the 52,000,000 people in England and Wales entered `jedi' as their religion on the census form. While little more than a lighthearted attempt to have something loved by millions recognised as a religion, the story does highlight rather well an issue that's actually becoming rather serious for employers: is it the employer's responsibility to cater for all employees' faiths in the workplace? And if the answer i...

And, in an anonymous comment on p.15, an employment expert points out that the Bill's attempts to close the equality pay gap fail to recognise that, for many women, choosing to work more flexible hours may be preferable to closing gender pay gaps. ...ssive regulation, and the recent decision (p.6) to halt the vetting and barring scheme are examples of the Coalition's intention to roll back, where possible, the power (some would argue, interference) of Government. David Cameron's overall policy, as the feature on p.18 explains, is to create a more locally involved (and devolved) Government, with the main priority constitutional change.
