  1. Unchecked eyesight poses safety risk

Many middle-aged UK workers are avoiding attending a sight test and potentially endangering the safety of others as a result.  According to a recent report from the College of Optometrists, one in five drivers aged between 35 and 55 has driven despite knowing they have poor eyesight. The report also found that as many as 9% of middle-aged workers operate heavy machinery, knowing their eyesight is not correct.  In the study, 28% of respondents said they had put off going for an eye test for up to six months after realizing their eyesight had deteriorated and 21% put it of...

  2. Eye tests for DSE Users

Where the DSE user is employed by an Agency rather than directly by the County Council, it is the responsibility of that Agency to pay for the eye and eyesight test and to make a contribution to any corrective appliances required.

  3. Free Eye sight tests - DSE

I understand that regulation 5 stipulates that anyone who is classified as a DSE user, is entitled to a free eye and eyesight test from their employer should they request one. I also understand that if needed the employer has to also fund corrective appliances but I am not sure if there is a limit for how much we (the employer) have to pay, especially if we only have to provide basic frames. I see that...

  4. Eyesight tests

Eye tests, when conducted under standard conditions, are both objective and accurate; substantially better than many other 'medical' tests undertaken. The DVLA have selected a number plate test that does not correspond exactly to one line of letters on a standard Snellen chart used by GPs and optician...

...le. It is better for users to be able to take breaks as they feel the need, rather than having a set pattern. The employer should ensure, through management and supervision, that adequate breaks are being taken. Eyesight tests and corrective appliances Regulation 5 concerns the provision of eye and eyesight tests and payment for certain types of corrective appliance (or glasses). All new users and anyone who was a user at 1 January 1993 are entitled to ask for an eye and eyesight test under this regulation. This must be provided, by the employer, free of charge, making use of a 'competent person'. I...

  8. Eye Sight Tests

Anonymous - Reg 5 states that employers have a duty to ensure the provision of appropriate eye and eyesight tests ON REQUEST to employees who already use DSE (display screen equipment) ad also to people who are being recruited to be a user. That seems to fit the description of someone 'on probation' to me. The requirement is universal, not a perk earned by long service. The actual legislation states that the ...

  9. Eye tests for DSE Users

Andrew, the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 simply require that users of DSE, amongst other things, have eye and eyesight tests. Specifically the Regulations say that the employer "shall ensure that [the employee]is provided at his request with an appropriate eye and eyesight test, any such test to be carried out by a competent person". Provided that you do that then you are complying with the law. I can see no obj...

...frequency of testing. The frequency will vary between individuals according to factors such as age. Opticians normally suggest 2 year interval for ordinary spectacle wearers, so this would be a good guideline. The duty on Employers is to provide a test where a user requests one. The provision of eye and eyesight tests and of special corrective appliances under the DSE Regulations is at the expense of the Employer. Hope this helps .....

  12. Eyesight tests

The relationship beteween eye test results and risk of motor vehicle accident is very grey indeed if you exclude extreme loss of visual accuity from the discussion. 13. DSE assessor training - DSE courses

...ct the health of workers by reducing risks from VDU work. Briefly, the Regulations require employers to: analyse workstations to assess and reduce risks; ensure workstations meet specified minimum requirements; plan work activities so that they include breaks or changes of activity; provide eye and eyesight tests on request, and special spectacles if needed; and provide information and training. Because of the nature of the risks, an individual assessment is required for each DSE training user; therefore many organisations choose to train people as DSE assessors in order to fulfill this function. Thi...

  14. Glasses Contribution

The guidance in the Health & Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 (as amended etc) in Regulation 5 is that the provision of eye and eyesight tests and of special corrective appliances is at the expense of the EMPLOYER. Not at the discretion, at the expense. Your optician's professional code of ethics will incorporate the principle to issue new prescriptions only when necessary for the health of the patient, not the health of the practice's ...
