Biography

Peter Trotter is the Partner heading the firm's Pensions & Employee Benefits Group. With degrees in English and Scots Law and a corporate and commercial law background, Peter is a specialist in pensions law and in employee share and incentive schemes. He is accredited as a specialist in pensions law by the Law Society of Scotland, a former winner of the NAPF Prize and Scottish Group Prize in the Pensions Management Institute associateship examinations, a Pensions Advisory Service (OPAS) adviser, a member of the Association of Pension Lawyers and the first Scottish member of the Society of Share Scheme Practitioners. Peter is a frequent speaker and writer of articles on pensions and employee benefits and has authored the Scottish section of Tolley’s Pensions Law, a major UK legal textbook, and pensions chapter in the third published edition of MacRoberts’ Scottish Liquidation Handbook. Peter provides specialist pensions law advice to employers, trustees and independent trustees. In addition to scheme documentation, he frequently advises on the pensions aspects of many corporate transactions including public sector and private sector transfers, the legal aspects of pension scheme mergers, investment management and custody agreements and the pension aspects of employment packages for senior executives. Peter also heads MacRoberts Trustees Limited, our independent professional trustee service. In addition he has created employee share schemes for many private and London Stock Exchange listed companies, has devised specially tailored employee incentive schemes including exit based arrangements, restructured private companies to put employee share schemes in place and created employee share schemes as vehicles to achieve management and employee buy?outs and buy-ins. Peter has also advised on share scheme aspects of takeovers and mergers and Stock Exchange listings.
