Phil's reputation management practice focuses on helping corporate and celebrity clients to manage their media portrayal. This includes taking preventative action to prevent or neuter damaging publicity and providing post-publication advice on damage limitation. Clients in this area range from leading companies such as Boeing and Novartis Pharma AG to public sector bodies such as the LDA, private individuals and plc directors. As a member of the firm's TMT sector, Phil advises on new media content issues, helping players in the converged TMT market to analyse their use of third party content and develop strategies for risk mitigation. He has also advised on a number of High Court and Copyright Tribunal claims in the music and IT industries. Recent public work includes obtaining a record award of libel damages for pioneering scientist Dr Rath, and acting as solicitor-advocate in a complex libel claim for Turkish entrepreneur Remzi Gur. His work is primarily behind the scenes however, helping clients to pre-empt and avoid damaging publicity through use of various legal and non-legal tools, including the innovative use of privacy laws to obtain injunctions to protect the reputations of corporate clients. He appears regularly on TV and in the press commenting on media law and provides training to in-house lawyers and communications teams, recent recipients including Transport for London, Canon, and PR firm Luther Pendragon.
