As the TUC Congress 2007 got underway in Brighton today (Monday), Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced proposals for a new requirement for all ‘skilled’ category workers to pass an English language test before they are permitted to work and reside in the UK.
Presently, only ‘highly-skilled’ workers are required to take such a test. Skill level is determined by a points system based on age, qualifications, earning power, UK experience, and English language ability.
