The regulationsThe two main pieces of legislation governing radiation in the UK are the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (currently under revision) and the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 (made under the Health and Safety at Work Act).The Radioactive Substances Act defines what is (and what is not) radioactive and imposes a duty on users of radioactive materials to register with the Environment Agency (EA).
