Due to the fact that deafness is not a visible illness and takes time to develop, this common work-related illness usually goes unnoticed by employers.
Hearing loss caused by exposure to noise at work is a significant occupational disease with large numbers of workers believing they suffer from a hearing problem caused or made worse by work (68,000 in 2005/06).
