The Employment Committee of the European Parliament has made the decision to scrap the individual opt-out in the Working Time Directive.
The current Working Time Regulations allow a worker to opt out of the 48-hour-week restriction by written agreement.
Commenting on the decision, CBI Deputy Director-General John Cridland said:
"The CBI is extremely disappointed that the Committee has failed to take a balanced approach to the issue of the individual opt-out, voting to remove it by 2010.
