A Muslim bus cleaner has been awarded £10,000 compensation under the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003, after he was dismissed for taking six weeks off work to visit Mecca.
Mohammed Sajwal Khan took his annual 25 days' entitlement, plus extra unpaid leave, to carry out the pilgrimage. Mr Khan claimed that he twice requested his employer NIC Hygiene Ltd for permission to take the time off - including a written request, as advised by his union - but received no respons...
