The Equal Pay Act 1970 entitles workers to be paid the same for work of 'equal value', albeit that the jobs being compared may be different. Such equal value cases have historically been notoriously slow, costly and difficult, requiring independent experts to give evidence in the form of a report to assess whether one job is of equal value with another.
The new Equal Pay Act 1970 (Amendment) Regulations 2004 came into force on 1 October 2004, and the key changes are as follows:
