The Acoustic Shock Programme is calling on call centres to do something about the risk of 'acoustic shock', which it claims is being faced by up to 300,000 call-centre operatives.
Acoustic Shock is a sudden spike of noise. Typical symptoms are, Tinnitus, burning sensation and hypersensitivity to loud sounds. It can also lead to anxiety, phone phobia, tiredness or depression.
Keith Broughton, former HSE Principal Specialist Inspector in noise and vibration, commented:
