Home Secretary David Blunkett has announced changes to the law which will make it easier to prosecute companies that employ illegal workers. The Asylum and Immigration (Treatment of Claimants etc) Bill creates a new offence of trafficking for exploitation, including forced labour, with a maximum penalty of 14 years.
The Government is also considering increasing the penalty for employing illegal workers, which currently stands at a maximum of £5,000 per employee.
