The Asylum and Immigration Act 1996 obliged employers to check the status of future recruits with criminal sanctions if basic checks were not carried out. Documentation that can be checked includes passports, birth certificates, residence permits, and so on.
The difficulties for employers are now widespread. According to People Management Magazine almost half of recruiters regularly receive applications from candidates without the requisite documents.
