City employers looking to cut costs by reducing or eliminating discretionary bonuses could find that such bonuses have, in fact, become an employee's right, warns law firm Reynolds Porter Chamberlain (RPC).
According to RPC, discretionary bonuses which have been paid at a fixed rate over a number of years or which have been calculated at a fixed percentage of salary for all employees could have become so entrenched in company policy that they turn into a contractual obligation.
