Stores will not be able to open on Christmas Day in England and Wales, under new plans published by the Government. The law currently prevents large stores from opening on Christmas Day when it falls on a Sunday, but not when it falls on other days.
The proposals are aimed at preserving the special status of the day; the Government is worried that competitive pressures could mean the widespread opening of large stores on Christmas day to the detriment of employees.
