When the Sex Discrimination Act was brought into force more than a quarter of a century ago, its fundamental purpose was to promote equality of opportunity as between the sexes. Equality of opportunity in this context requires that everyone is given the same opportunities regardless of their sex, and that requires ignoring preconceived ideas or stereotypical assumptions about members of a particular sex.
