Sickness absence continues to be a major cost to UK business. According to the Work Foundation (formerly the Industrial Society) sickness rates have gone up by more than a third in the last year. The percentage of the working year lost has risen to 4.12% from 2.9%. In the public sector the rate has gone up from 2.97% to 7.86%. Stress was one of the most common explanations for sickness.
