Bank holidays are always a cause of debate, particularly regarding the question of whether employees have the right to take the day off.
The law is relatively straightforward: UK workers have no statutory right to take the Christmas and New Year bank holidays as time off, or any right to receive holiday pay if they do. Employees also have no right to be paid a special rate for working bank holidays. Many employers choose to give workers these rights through employment contracts.
