Huntsman Petrochemicals (UK) Ltd was yesterday fined a total of £23,000 by Teesside magistrates, after around 100 tonnes of the chemical benzene escaped into the River Tees.
The firm pleaded guilty to an offence against the Water Resources Act 1991 and one against the Environmental Protection Act 1990 in a prosecution brought by the Environment Agency.
