The Government has implemented legislation to ensure that the sending of
hate mail - whether by traditional or electronic means - is an
imprisonable offence. The Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 which came
into force last year amends the Malicious Communications Act 1988 and also
gives the police new powers to deal with protests outside homes.
Notably, modern electronic methods of communication are included within
the parameters of the amended legislation and the Act covers those hate
