An employer from Lancashire has been imprisoned for serious breaches of the fire regulations. Mr Matiwala's fire precautions were described by the Judge as "lamentable". A routine visit by fire officers in 1999 found a fire escape nailed shut, another fire escape locked, poorly maintained fire escapes and fire extinguishers, and a fire alarm that did not work. A fire services spokesman said that more than 100 lives had been put at risk.
