The European Commission has released new proposals intended to strengthen the working rights and protection of women taking maternity leave.
An agreement is hoped to be reached during 2009 which would boost the length and pay of maternity leave in European countries, seeing the minimum period of fully paid leave increase from 14 weeks (as outlined under the Pregnant Workers Directive 92/85/EC) to 18 weeks.
