The new research promoting the improvement of worker ergonomic health via the use of processes such as the Alexander technique is welcome, but not a complete solution to the problem by any means.
Without having to research too extensively, anyone can discover online that Mr. F. Mathias Alexander, the founder of the ergonomic philosophy later imaginatively titled the ‘Alexander technique’, first started laying out the main elements of his ergonomic philosophy over a hundred years ago.
However, his theories are still making the headlines here in 2008, thanks to the findings of a trial reported in Workplace Law a couple of weeks ago (20 August 2008).
According to the trial, which was jointly funded by the Medical Research Council and the NHS Research and Development fund, 463 patients were treated over the course of a year combining the methods of Alexander technique with regular GP visits and massage, with the findings published recently in the British Medical Journal.
This paper explores the implications of the findings for businesses, explaining why correct workplace ergonomics are important to employee health.
