Employers often find that employing individuals with learning difficulties provides them with excellent workers who can, with a few minor adjustments, prove that they are willing and able to work to the highest standards.
Mencap have produced a report, Valued in Public, found on the Mencap website at www.mencap.org.uk. This covers the topic of employing someone with learning difficulties. One of the findings of that report is that employers comment time and time again that individuals with learning difficulties are dedicated, hard working members of staff.
Attracting staff with learning difficulties has had a positive impact on their business and its employees, making it more representative of the community, fostering awareness of disability issues for staff, which in turn helps in delivering services to those with disabilities. Despite this, less than one in five people with a learning disability work, although 65% want to work. Those that work are often part-time or receive little pay.
