The 1998 Data Protection Act (“the Act”) places far reaching obligations on organisations that handle personal data. The Act effectively implements an EC Directive on data protection aimed at harmonising the data protection (DP) framework across EU states. The object of the Directive is to protect “the fundamental rights and freedoms of natural persons, and in particular their right to privacy with respect to the processing of personal data”.
