Short term absences account for 80% of all employee absences. The average worker is absent for 8.4 days per year. The annual average cost to the employer of short term absences is £598 per employee. This figure is, of course, much higher where the employees are highly paid.
Even if you set aside the cost implications, you still need to consider the impact that short term absences have on the remainder of your workforce. Employees who are less prone to absence can become resentful of employees who are often absent, creating bad feeling amongst the workforce which ultimately decreases productivity. Intervention at an early stage is crucial.
