Modern multi-storey buildings, i.e. over 38 floors, have been architecturally designed to incorporate a series of fireproof lifts. These can be arranged in short stages or as an express lift or elevator covering longer distances.
The criteria defining a fireproof lift include:
- a separate power supply;
- internal communication;
- a pressurised lift shaft;
- smoke detection;
- smoke expulsion fans; and
- fire wall protection.
This white paper looks at the case for and against using fireproof lifts in an evacuation strategy.
