Section 1 of the Employment Rights Act 1996 requires an employer to provide its employees with a statement of terms and conditions of employment within two months of the commencement of that employment. This statement will form the express contractual terms between the employer and the employee.

Once the contract of employment is made it is legally binding. Neither party can alter those terms without the agreement of the other. However invariably during the course of an employment relationship the terms and conditions are likely to change considerably.
