British Nuclear Fuels has been fined £12,000 after an investigation by the Environment Agency found radioactive materials in a worker's drawer. The company was fined for breaches of health and safety at work regulations. BNFL had failed to register radioactive sources that they used to test alarm systems. The company admitted to offences committed at a number of sites between January 1997 and December 2000. This in BNFL's tenth conviction for environmental offences in ten years.
