There is a legal requirement for the provision of accessible workplaces. Twelve years after the introduction of legislation to ensure equality of employment and provision of services, many employers, service providers or those involved in the design and/or management neither understand the legislation or how to address the issues surrounding an accessible workplace environment.
This paper looks in detail at the issues surrounding accessible workplaces and discusses appropriate solutions to issues which cannot be addressed simply through physical changes. It discusses the different approaches to disability, comparing the different, integrated pieces of legislation which include the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and Building Regulations before explaining how barriers can be resolved in a cost effective manner without destroying exciting and innovative design.
It is first important to understand the difference between an accessible workplace and an inclusive workplace.
