A binman who was secretly followed by a private detective before he was fired has been awarded €15,000 compensation for unfair dismissal, the Irish Independent reports.
An Employment Appeals Tribunal found that Galway City Council failed to establish that Joseph Murphy had been working while absent for sickness.
During four days of hearing in March and May, the tribunal was told that the council decided to hire a private investigator to covertly follow him in November 2004.
