Few companies bother about their waste or understand how it compares to their overall product / service outputs. There is little knowledge of what happens to it once the ‘bin’ is emptied. Yet the legal, operational and – often – customer or staff impacts of ignoring waste are rising up the agenda. The pressures originate from a complex web of fiscal and regulatory measures which this synopsis is designed to explain and put in context. Workplaces which do not produce waste are a rarity but those who think it is not important are commonplace. Which are you?

The Waste Management Policy and Management Guide version 3.0 has been published to help employers in England and Wales ensure that they comply with their duties under law, and to provide a clear record of the policy and procedure.

The draft policy covers:
  • An overview of legislation
  • Responsibilities
  • Waste management record details
  • Waste classification
  • Sources of Further Information
  • and more...

The draft policy also comes with a 42-page Management Guide containing helpful notes on the policy plus example forms, transfer notes and extra guidance on filling them in.

About the Authors

Biffa Waste Services is the largest waste management company operating in the UK – it is the largest wholly British owned waste management company and can justifiably claim to be the most diverse in terms of its spread of interest in industrial / commercial and domestic collection, landfill, liquid waste stream and specialist hazardous waste management systems. The company has a turnover of around £650m at a current annualised rate and is also in the top three waste management companies operating in Belgium. They are owned wholly by Severn Trent Plc with over 110 operating centres throughout the UK. They handle 12 million tonnes of material which is treated, landfilled or recycled on behalf of an extensive customer base exceeding 65,000 in the public, commercial and industrial sectors.

Bureau Veritas UK & Ireland provide a broad range of consulting and laboratory services to companies operating within the built and natural environments. Their services are deployed to a wide range of clients and sectors, including major blue chip companies, offshore operators, consumer products and local authorities. The built environment division closely monitors and evaluates risks relating to people working within the workplace and any other type of building.  The built environment has a major influence on health, welfare, morale and productivity of employees, contractors and
visitors alike. Managing these risk factors is a key issue for all organisations and new legal precedents are being set to ensure statutory requirements are met.
