Today (1 August) marks the one month anniversary since the workplace smoking ban came into force in England under the Health Act 2006. There are conflicting reports as to how well the new legislation is going down; the licensed trade reports dwindling customers and falling profits; a bingo hall in Northampton has been forced to close; and drivers are protesting angrily against signage requirements. However, there have been very few reports of fines for flouting the ban, and, to date, just one licensee is facing legal action - Hamish Howitt of the Happy Scotts pub in Blackpool is due in Court today.
