NEBOSH exam
study with Workplace Law Training

Completing the NEBOSH exam and gaining accreditation is a good way of providing yourself with a solid foundation to build a career in health and safety. You might be looking to improve your knowledge as a health and safety professional or you could be embarking on a career in health and safety for the first time - either way a NEBOSH qualification gives you an industry recognised, benchmark standard that will help enhance any health and safety minded CV.

NEBOSH: exam: National General Certificate

The NEBOSH Certificate is split into 3 sections, NGC1, NGC2 and NGC3. NGC1 and NGC2 are examined by written papers while NGC3 concludes with a practical assessment. Each written paper is 2 hours in duration and revision and self study is required. As many students are studying for the first time in several years it is essential that you take a disciplined approach to this course. It is recommended that you study between 110 and 130 hours before taking the NEBOSH exam, so it is not a qualification that you should approach lightly. Workplace Law's NEBOSH exams for NGC1 and NGC2 are conducted on the same day in two sessions (morning and afternoon).

NEBOSH exam: Modules and pass rates

Each written paper includes ten 8 mark questions and one 20 mark question. While the exams are based on up-to-date changes to health and safety law and regulation, it is not likely that delegates will be examined on changes to legislation that have only come into effect in the six months before the exam date.

  • NGC1 - Management of Health and Safety
    National average pass rates: 53%
Workplace Law Training pass rates: 84%
  • NGC2 - Controlling workplace hazards

Workplace Law Training pass rates: 98%
  • NGC3 - Practical assessment

Workplace Law Training pass rates: 98%

NEBOSH National General Certificate exam results from our most recent intake (March 2009) The NEBOSH certificate results included 20 credits and 10 distinctions.

There is no syllabus for the NGC3 part of the NEBOSH exam. Delegates are expected to show their knowledge of NGC1 and NGC2 in a working environment by conducting a risk assessment that is written up as a report to senior management.

Some delegates are surprised when they come across their first NEBOSH questions so it important that students become accomplished with the terminology and style that NEBOSH adopts. NEBOSH provide a guide to the action verbs used in their questions and it is suggested that students get to grips with these as marks can be lost in this area.

Delegates are advised to practice answering questions in the run up to the NEBOSH exam. Sample questions are available in core textbooks and your tutor will be able to help with past exam papers and examiners comments where appropriate. Past papers can also be purchased direct from NEBOSH. Delegates are advised to test themselves under exam conditions as much as possible prior to the final NEBOSH exam. Often experience can be the difference between passing and failing the course.
