Following up from my previous comment and others, I was reading the Metro on the way into work and there was an article intimating prosecution of Stirling Council for breaches of Health & Safety laws in school woodwork shops in relation to lack of control measures dealing with wood dust.

For those of you who know very little about the health effects of wood dust I would suggest you visit the Microsite on the HSE Website. Link below. Fine wood dust not only affects your respiratory system, some hard wood dusts are carcinogens and can cause nasl cancers.
Like everything else some journalists will go to all extremes to try and ridicule Health and Safety legislation which is in place to ensure that each day you return from work free of injury and with no detriment to your health from workplace practices.
I speak both as a person who has worked in a very busy joiners shop and as a Health and Safety Professional.

It is good to see an improvement in this matter, however these statistics don't include work related deaths occurring whilst driving in the course of employment.
Is it not time to start including this information to enable resources to be targeted at the major issue. I am positive that there were more than 38 fatalities during the same period through work related driving accidents.

Hi David, I guess you have got the message by now that MSN is recordable, it does save as a text file on your PC. Regarding your comment about writing on toilet doors in your employment, I guess if you are that way inclined you stand the chance of being sacked for wilful damage. have a nice day.

I fully support the ban, but wonder how they get a figure of 700 lives being saved each year.

This was a foreseeable risk having removed the requirement for fire certificates and dependance upon landlords etc having to conduct their own fire risk assessment.
Fortunately there has not been a major incident as yet to call into question the change s made to the Fire Precautions Act and subsequent legislation.
I am sure this issue is widespread across the whole of the UK

The race was not cancelled due to health and safety regulations as stated in the first line.
The race was cancelled as the Council decided to make a charge for closing a road off, why not do this for free. With regards to insurance risk assessments I believe this is normal practice and again normally voluntary first aid staff can cover the event.
Blaming health and safety regulations is just an excuse and a load of conkers.
