This company should be named and shamed. I both employ people needing extra support and carry out management training covering DDA- specifically around stress & mental health etc, frankly I positively endorse Sheena Farendens comments - managers that support people with disabilities are the ones less likley to be in grievance hearings and most likely to be managing an effecient happy team. The line manager and the seniour manager who heard the grevience need training before they as do any more damage to either the employees or the business! Good Luck E Palmer, keep on keeping on.

It is still shocking to me that employers and managers are still denying or failing to recognise stress in the workplace. There are more people on benefits because of mental ill health than any other single disability. When as a society are we going to recognise the financial let alone emotional cost of stress as an illness? As a provider of training that includes mental health and stress packages, we are constantly amazed by the lack of employers understanding or support for people who are suffering from workplace stress and mental ill health, as well as the inability to accept that it can happen to anyone in their workplace!

Alen, your arguments are indeed cogent and you appear to be very knowledgeable. However, as a former firefighter with 20yrs city experience, i would suggest that unless there is a strong risk to life or being trapped, in the first instance on finding a fire, operate the fire alarm alert all you can then call the emergency services, dont fight the fire unless it is really small and relatively contained or risking life. People rarely remember most of what they are taught in extinguisher training and it is so easy to be overcome by smoke and fumes when your body's adrenalin is racing around. The human being in us panics when things go wrong, even firefighters die because of this. We should be concentrating on risk reduction not fire fighting skills.I believe that we should be leaving firefighting to the people with the protective equipment- so i will be out first then!
