Nearly every day now this WPLN site highlights health and safety breaches by contractors in the construction industry, nearly every day I pass building sites and can see open disregard to Health and Safety Regulations, from small to large contractors, some breaches would be classed as very serious. One hopes that the HSE in its revised set-up under the new Acts of Parliament, will get very tough ASAP throughout the UK, with the construction industry, and that courts will impose very hefty fines on guilty company's. The waiting time for action is long overdue.

At last the HSE understands how bad are health & safety precautions on building sites (refurbishment/new build) throughout the UK, many more new inspectors are required to carry out spot checks on a regular basis. The building industry has decided that health & Safety is a low priority on sites due to lack of HSE inspection/action, and its a way of saving money. The Government should now invest more money in the HSE so their job can be carried out efficiently and with far more tough prosecutions against contractors.

This sort of abuse of the Health & Safety Regulations is now a regular occurrence within workshops, factories and on building sites, its all to cut corners and save money, and will happen more often in the coming year/s given the current economic downturn. Only a considerable increase in site inspections by HSE inspectors will slow the abuse.

I agree with the TUC comments, only last Friday I walked by a building site in the centre of Bournemouth, there were approximately eight operatives working on the site doing ground works and some block-work. There was also a small track digger machine working on the site which is only a small area and is right on the road side. None of the operatives had hard hats on, protected boots were not being used by some of them, also no gloves being used when unloading steel-work from a lorry. There was no Health and Safety signage on the front of the site or visible within the site from the road. Clearly Health & Safety was not a priority on this site, this due to lack of inspection and enforcement by HSE etc.
