Thanks so much for all your helpful comments. I am now sorting stocks of the ear muff and voice pipes and will put in place the cleaning and testing before they are re-issued.

Can anyone help me please? I am trying to find out if there are any health and safety issues with re-using headsets for staff in call centres? We have many spares and up until now have always bought new headsets for each member of staff. Is it ok to reuse the exisitng headsets when staff have left the company?

Can anyone please advise of the obligations within BS7671? I understand about the 5 year full electrical test but what is involved in the annual tests? Any information would be very helpful thanks.

Katy, As per Julian's comment, I too have spent many years working in smoke-free offices so the impact of the ban at work is minimal. We did discuss the idea of helping employees to stop smoking. Whilst this was brought up as a consequence of the ban, the primary reason we considered this was due to the time off work for smoking breaks or possible related illness being so significant which won't necessarily reduce because of the ban. Difficult one to sell though as there is a general feeling that those staff who smoke have more paid time out of the office than those who don't. Currently, we have opted for the more practical measures and given employees as much information on how they can stop smoking through NHS http://www.gosmokefree.co.uk and local help-groups.
