This would seem to be the most practical solution in merging the two organisations and will hopefully make it clearer to all with one point of contact.

It sounds to me if Mr Hutton is suggesting employers should only entertain the idea of flexible working on an 'ad-hoc' basis rather than have a clearly defined policy? Surely a policy could be constructed with specific conditins to prevent any risks to their operational needs?

In these times of constant change in practice, new Technology and the ever demanding performance objectives, it is sometimes difficult to reach the final destination and derive completion. Have the 'goal posts' moved or has someone removed them completely so that we have no direction to aim at.
It has to be said at times that we are never quite sure 'how much needs to be done', 'when we will be finished', which I believe leads us to this feeling of uncertaintly and the necessity to do 'just that bit more'!

I couldn't agree more, Directors and Senior Managers should be leading by example and have a good understanding of their own Health & Safety and legal responsibilities, after all in many cases they are the named person (identified by Law)who is ultimately responsible for the well being of their employees.

All I can say is Bah Humbug to those companies or organisations who try to hamper the Christmas spirit! It's a time of goodwill to all men and women of course. Let's get a reality check and wish well in the festive period to our colleagues.
Health & Safety if used correctly is to prevent anyone suffering discomfort or pain at work not to stand in the way of people enjoying themselves.
Let's try the common sense approach!!

One of my colleagues is 76-years young and is one of the most concientious hard working individuals one could wish to meet. He has a very responsible role within our organisation, trains all new staff joining his team and is a real role model. As long as he is happy with us and we are happy with him there is no problem in him continuing indefinately.

Bullying at work is a major issue and needs eliminating from the workplace as much as possible. The effects of bullying do not confine themselves to the workplace and peoples lives can be made a misery! What happened to treating others how you wish to be treated yourself?

The whole issue of claiming sickness whilst on leave is certainly a grey area and would seem to be at the discretion of the employer.Whether a certificate from your GP would assist in claiming back your leave allowance I couldn't say.Dare I say that you may or may not be credited with the leave based upon your personal attendance at work and the ammount of annual leave available to the individual in question. It has been known 'allegedly'for employees within certain company's counting on sick days as additional days leave when their entitlemnt is running low, not that I am suggesting for one minute that any of the contributors are abusing the system in any way shape or form.It ceratinly poses questions for both employee and employer.

An IT Policy within the working environment would be a start as you rightly state. It's very difficult to 'police'Internet usage without giving more credence to the 'Big Brother' theory. As far as these interactive 'self-build' web pages are concerened one does have to think of the implications of making defamatory comments about your current employer. It is also worth considering the type of content and personal information posted upon these sites which can be viewed by current and prospective employers.

The same can be said for sites such as Friendsreunited where you have the opportunity to fill in past schools and workplaces. Is this also somewhere to check associations of individuals where contracts or employment are concerned?
What happened to getting to know someone and making judgement calls on a face to face basis?

The Facilities Manager's role appears to be ever changing and encompassing more and more frontline responsibilty and potentially liabilty!
It's knowing where the buck stops and who at the end of the day is ultimatetely responsible in the eyes of the law.

One thing to remember is it is not necessarily the staff one has to risk assess for but for outside parties such as friends and family members. Are the external visitors aware of the special precautions which may already be in place for staff? You wouldn't necessarily be given a site induction when you arrive for a party and what happens if the guest/guests are separated from their host? What insurance cover and liability would need to be in place for these events? Of course one thing to remember is that the company is still responsible for the staff whilst they are attending the festivities whether on company premesis or not the duty of care still stands.

Bullying is a very common problem but could be reduced by implementing a suitable bullying/harassment eradication policy to educate the workforce. It is difficult at times though to differentiate between work pressures/deadlines/targets and whether you may feel that you are actually being bullied.Within our organisation we have voluntary Fair Treatment Advisors who are available to discuss with individuals in confidence problems which they may be experiencing and the opportunity for all staff to have a sounding board.

This is very useful information and I will indeed be following the useful tips on how to minimise water waste, although I would feel much more comfortable knowing that my water supplier were also taking measures to do the same!

Re:Graham Jones 16th June 2005
I would imagine this would be a common problem for all employees who are on-call/key holders to premesis having already completed their statutory hours?
