As a contractor I use the same system as the staff, electronic/magnetic swipe card at the entrance door, again at the lift lobby to acceess the lifts and the required floor, by hand writing in on a spread sheet the actual time of arrival on the floor of the office block, if as my normal day ie in at 7.30 ish read and answer e-mails then clock out with the swipe card as well as on the relevant floor using another spread sheet file to list my time of leaving my anticipated time back in the office and the actual time back in, if I go to site straight from home I have to ring in to register that I am actually on site, the latter being to cover me and the company from an insurance point of view along with concerns about smokers taking time out when non smoking office staff kept working and finally to have an accurate fire roll in the event of an emergency.

for those of us who survey and manage asbestos registers for clients, I can see it's only amatter of time before we have to survey for MDF in the same way as Asbestos.

I have just tried to complete a Type 2 Survey in an LA Council Building in the North West today Thursday.
On asking the registra of Births, Deaths and Marriages if it was possible to survey all rooms within the unit, she refused access on the grounds that today and tommorrow are her busiest days of the year and on Friday the President of registra is visiting the unit, this is all despite a letter, fax, phone call and e-mail in February with follow up calls to confirm access. I only wish people like her were brought nefore the County Court to explain that in her opinion the busy unit comes before any legislation, we all know this will never happen but it infuriates me that people who are supposed to be educated are nothing more than ignorant, my colleagues and I are nothing more than a distraction to these people.
As for architects, stop providing fancy designs and seating areas with trees etc and admit to your clients ASBESTOS is the first priorty.

It's not before time the HSE used it's powers along with the court system, in order to make directors, (who are supposed to be ultimatley responsible for the actions and omissions of it's work force)wake up to the fact that Health and Safety does not come before money, but does come at a price, a heavy one in this acse for non compliance.
It does beg the question whether or not the unit or the Poundstretcher chain itself was closed because one assumes it did not comply with the current regulations ie Regulation 4 a Duty to manage.
