I agree that issues are sensationalised by the press but the reality is that people are being socially engineered by the government and the 'do gooders' that persue such lunitic policies. What they are really doing is enforcing their will on people because they think they know better and what is good for all. I believe that most people in this country are fed up with all this nonsense and political correctness. Unfortunately, most are afraid to speak out for the fear of recriminations. We are sleep walking in to becoming a totalitarian state where what people say and do are controlled. Ever seen the film 'V'? If not - watch it and you will understand what I mean. I also agree that few people are born with 'common sense' which is why, in my view, the country is heading in the wrong direction that will ultimately result in civil unrest. Common sense is not meaningless- it is a measure of someone's intelligence and gives an individual the ability to decide on what is actually right and wrong as well as what is reasonable. It is this that determines morals and fairness in any society and is what the law should be based on. Sadly, there are few who have it! The absense of common sense results in stupid laws which are not necessary and there are many examples that can be quoted. These stupid laws unfairly affect peoples lives disproportionally to the apparent offence. Constantly, laws and policies are brought in to rob people of their reason and coerce their thinking and partly because of this people are unjustly and needlessly sued, jailed or penalised in some other way. There are somethings in society that should be outlawed in order to maintain morality, law and order but people should be permitted to speak freely and have the freedom of expression, within reason, without the fear of saying the wrong thing that would offend someone or someones belief. Common sense can decide what is reasonable and what is not as well as what is offensive. Fairness and freedom should be valued - sadly both are being slowly eroded.

Ooops! I appear to have touched a raw nerve. Never mind the article as the proposals by the government are quite clear as they and others see them as the only way to address the apparent problem. If they are pushed through it wil not be acceptable to discriminate against females and ethnic minorities etc but it will be ok to discriminate against white males and will be called 'positive action'. If this makes sense to anyone then perhaps they need help. What is so wrong in treating everyone the same regardless of their sex, race, creed and disabilty etc? It is after all called 'equal opportunities'. Perhaps it should actually be called 'equal but unequual (where it suits) opportunities'. Justice and fairness are core values to a civilised society and when these break down you just eventually end up with hatred and anarchy.

It's been interesting to read these comments some of which are no suprise in this day and age in this country. The comments made are a prime example of what is wrong with this country in that the 'do gooders' have too much say and are void of any common sense. They preach to others that there should be no discrimiation but yet also preach that there should be discrimination where it suits their personnal beliefs and views. These views( in their world) should be imposed on others for the greater good. This is just simply double standards and hypocrisy. Discrimination of any kind should be unaaceptable and people should very simply be judged on merit alone. To deny white males from applying for jobs which will deny them the right to earn an honest living and compete with others on merit is morally repugnant and uncivilised. Unfortunately, the absence of common sense by creating ethnic and female short lists in what is seen as 'positive action' is in reality dressed up 'negative action'. It will only serve to anger a large swath of the population and further undermine democracy and order in this country. The old saying of 'to look to the future we should look at the past' should ring warning bells. Legislation like this will significantly contribute to an already swelling of resentment towards these 'do gooders' and the inabilities of successive governments that that persue such unfair, dictatorial and inept policies. As one member pointed out - they will only realise their mistake when it is too late.

The comments made by the on-line advisor are symptomatic of what is wrong with this country - no common sense. Discrimination in any form should not happen whether it is positive or not. People should be judged and selected on merit alone. Discrimiation in any form leads to hatred. How can this be for the greater good? What rubbish!!!!

It is well recognised and recorded that the sun has a major influence on our climate and this has been the way since perhaps time began. Global Warming may be a fact in view of the sun's activity but it is extremely unlikely that it is caused by man producing CO2. Unfortunately people are being educated to believe in a convenient untruth in order to control people and generate benefits to the self interests of certain groups and organisations including governments. I wish more people would speak out against this CO2 rubbish unless, of course, it can be proved beyond any doubt. Nice to see that both John and Phillip have a sense of reality.

What has happened to common sense in this country? It's ironic that this zeolous political correctness is leading to inequality. Madness!

There is nothing wrong with reducing CO2 and I agree that it is a sensible thing to do. We should do what we can to use our natural resources wisely and protect the environment. However, I believe that all this scare mongering over C02 which has not been proved is unnecessay and is an excuse for the zealots among us to promate themselves and the organisations they represent. Politicians use it as a vote winner and a means of extracting more money from the public which is totally unfair especially when it has not been scientifically proven. Fortnightly rubbish collections may increase recycling but it also saves councils money at the risk of disease. This country may well be a power among nations but it is heading in the wrong direction. All super-powers throughout history have fallen. Why is that? This country should set an example to all by adopting common sense (which seems to be lacking these days)and promoting fairness and freedom instead of promoting what is fast becoming a new religion based on a myth.

There is the assumption by all that CO2 is the cause of global warming. This has not been proved and there are other probable causes which few seem to be aware of. The hidden agenda behind this CO2 issue is mainly about enhancing the standing of individuals and organisations who seek greater recognition, attracting funding, extracting taxes from the population and facilitating greater control over the same.
The UK could lead by example and fully and openly examining the evidence and tell the truth instead of promoting what could be a myth.

Is there anyone who would be kind enough to let me have an electronic version of a good template/example of a contract/specification for a nil-cost catering service that will assist me in preparing a new contract? Any info would be welcome. jthomas@barry.ac.uk

Yet another piece of legislation aimed at controlling the people of this country that is based entirely on a myth. How a government can introduce legislation to force this issue without hard evidence to prove that Co2 is changing the climate is beyond comprehension, unless there is an ulterior motive. There is a wealth of evidence that suggests that climate change is a natural process and that the only major thing that affects our climate is the SUN. It is a well known fact that the sun is expanding and its cycles change from time to time particularly with regard to sun spots. Both of these affect our climate. In fact the temperature of the earth was hotter than it is now a thousand years ago when we produced little Co2. This evidence and much more is conveniently ignored by the green lobby and politicans seeking favour with the public. What is a serious concern is that this evidence is being ignored at our peril and we may pay dearly for this in years to come. By the time our mistake is realised it may be too late. Why? Because Co2 may be protecting this world from increased temperatures by reducing penetration of the sun's rays. Following 9/11 all planes in the USA were grounded for 3 days and there were no vapour trails (Co2)from planes. During this time the earth's temperature increased significantly. When planes were allowed to fly again temperatures returned to normal. What is this about? It's called the Global Cooling Theory and was shown in a BBC documentary. Co2 could actually be protecting the earth but this is all ignored. It is just a theory but so is the Co2 issue. It may be true that if you tell a lie long enough and often enough, people will believe it. Unfortunately, there is no money to be made in the alternative theory so we ignore it, but at what real cost?

This is just madness. How the government expect people to pay £1.34 a mile is hard to understand. Buisnesses are closing because of high energy prices and this will have the same effect. People just will not be able to travel to work except those that work locally. Poor road management is partly to blame and it is alledged by some that congestion is purposly being made worse in the run up to road pricing in order to justify it. What is behind the reason for a wave of traffic light installations on roundabouts which have caused chaos. In some cases the lights have had to be switched off because of the congestion caused. What a waste of public money this has been! Timing of lights also seem to have been altered to cause congestion. It is alleged by some that London did this prior to the application of the congestion charge. Is there a conspiracy? Certainly, someone needs to investigate this. People need to travel to earn a living and public transport simply does not exist in alot of circumstances. However, the answer to congestion (according to certain quarters)is to penalise those that need to travel by car to earn a living and get them off the road. In other words put them out of work. What geniuses!

It is difficult to comment on this issue without knowing the full facts. However, it is worrying that the CPS have decided to opt for a retrial given the obvious difficulties in apportioning blame to one person when others were involved. What would be in the public interest is for all parties at fault to share responsibility. In this respect the decision and logic of the CPS is questionable. The ramifications of a guilty verdict are enormous!

Eastern Energy supplied us with gas from 1996-1998 and from 1999-2000. For 1998-1999 we were supplied by another supplier. Powergen, who have taken over Eastern Energy have employed a billing company to scutinise the account since 1996. All invoices received from the supplier were payed in good faith in the belief that they were correct. Now they have noticed an error they made with the readings and calculations and insist that we owe them monies in the region of £30,000. UBM (the billing company and agent of Powergen) have threatened litigation and interest on the debt. This was presented to us in 2003 and has been in dispute for approx the last eighteen months. In view of the time scales involved it has been difficult for us to verify this claim given the level of resources we have. Where do we stand from a legal point of view?
